Graduate students pursuing a Master's degree at the University of Florida must complete 36 credit hours, consisting of 5 core courses and electives. They can choose between a Thesis or Non-thesis track. Both paths require students to fulfill the Graduate Council's mandate for interdisciplinary knowledge in criminology and law studies. These MA credits may apply toward the 90-hour PhD requirement if students continue into that program. Program details are accessible.
The Sociology and Criminology & Law Department provides multiple graduate pathways, including PhDs in Sociology and Criminology, Law and Society, MAs in both fields, and a dual MA/JD in Criminology. Additionally, the department collaborates with the School of Natural Resources to offer interdisciplinary Ecology degrees at both MA and PhD levels. Qualified undergraduates can pursue accelerated BA/MA programs in Sociology or Criminology, Law and Society.
These graduate programs equip students for academic careers or applied research positions by building theoretical knowledge, research skills, and professional capabilities. The curriculum strategically introduces essential theory courses early in the program, along with quantitative methods and statistics sequences to develop independent research abilities. Sociology students also receive training in qualitative research methodologies.
