The Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D.) is an advanced research degree demanding self-directed expertise in a specialized discipline. The Graduate School and MAE offer significant flexibility for customizing individual academic paths. Ph.D. candidates must complete at least 39 graded credit hours (excluding S/U courses) beyond their bachelor's degree. Students should submit a Study Plan by their second semester, including a provisional dissertation title. Any major changes to the approved Study Plan require advisor consultation and formal updates to the document.
The Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering Department oversees Master of Science programs in both Aerospace Engineering (MSAE) and Mechanical Engineering (MSME), along with Ph.D. programs in these fields. MAE supports around 400 graduate students, with roughly equal numbers pursuing master's and doctoral degrees.
