Collaborating with our faculty specialists, you'll utilize analytical, computational, and experimental approaches to tackle problems in these domains. You'll develop technical versatility enabling you to transcend disciplinary barriers and address increasingly sophisticated engineering challenges. This research-focused program aims to cultivate tomorrow's leaders in both industry and academia within Mechanical Engineering. The PhD curriculum facilitates close mentorship with faculty authorities studying subjects like adaptive technologies, intelligent structures, nanoscale thermal phenomena, energy solutions, robotic systems, advanced composites, and computational fluid dynamics. Students can leverage extensive partnerships including: the Center for Bioengineering Innovation, Center for Materials Interfaces in Research and Applications, Physics and Astronomy Department, School of Earth Sciences and Environmental Sustainability, plus regional collaborators like W.L. Gore and Associates, Lowell Observatory, and the Navy Precision Optical Interferometer. Participants customize their coursework and undertake original research projects, utilizing advanced facilities before presenting their dissertation through an oral defense.

Qualification Requirements

The NAU graduate online application is required for all programs. Admission to many graduate programs is on a competitive basis, and programs may have higher standards than those established by the Graduate College.
Admission requirements include the following:
Transcripts.
Undergraduate degree from a regionally accredited institution with a 3.0 GPA on a 4.0 scale (A = 4.0), or the equivalent.Individual program admission requirements over and above admission to NAU are required.
A minimum of a BS degree in Mechanical Engineering or a closely related field.
GRE scores
Three references (submitted via a web interface)
A personal statement describing their professional goals and research interests
A resume or curriculum vitae
Admitted students are expected to have undergraduate educational experiences, including general education studies, that are similar to those required for a baccalaureate at Northern Arizona University.
