The Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D.) is an intensive research degree demanding self-directed expertise in a specialized area. The Graduate School and MAE provide substantial flexibility for customizing each student's academic path. Ph.D. candidates must complete at least 39 graded credit hours (not counting S/U courses) after earning their bachelor's degree. By their second semester, students should submit a Study Plan featuring a preliminary dissertation topic. If significant changes occur during their studies, students must consult their advisor and submit an updated Study Plan reflecting these modifications.
