As the predominant language in the European Union following Brexit, German shares official status with English and French. It serves as the primary language in Germany, Austria, and Liechtenstein, while holding co-official status in Switzerland and Luxembourg. Globally, more than 130 million individuals speak German, with approximately 7.5 million forming German-speaking minorities across 42 nations. The German track within the Foreign Languages and Literatures major extends beyond linguistic proficiency, fostering diverse literacies in students.
The Foreign Languages and Literatures (FLL) bachelor's program equips students with in-depth expertise in one or more languages alongside advanced understanding of related cultural practices. This major cultivates analytical thinking, communication abilities, and intercultural awareness relevant to today's globalized society. Students enjoy the flexibility to pursue single or dual language specializations while engaging with culture through interdisciplinary lenses like Comparative Cultural Studies, Visual Media, Regional Studies, Literary Analysis, and Historical Period Studies. An FLL degree prepares graduates for diverse professional paths, from advanced studies in language/culture or humanities to careers in education, international relations, public service, security, media, legal fields, arts administration, publishing, and global commerce. Students are strongly advised to participate in UF-sponsored or approved international study programs.
