Africana Studies is an interdisciplinary program rooted in social sciences and humanities. The Bachelor of Arts degree equips students to critically analyze the social, political, intellectual, and artistic aspects of African American and African Diasporic experiences. Through comparative studies of various media including articles, books, films, art, and archival documents, students learn to articulate this knowledge both verbally and in writing while applying their skills to serve local Black communities. These competencies can be integrated into diverse career paths.
The Africana Studies (AFRA) Social Studies Education specialization prepares students with cross-disciplinary knowledge about African diaspora communities for K-12 teaching. This track offers an education-focused degree that trains future educators to teach culturally relevant content, history, and issues from African-descended perspectives. Students complete all required coursework for teaching certification, including classroom practicum experience. Graduates earn a bachelor's degree in AFRA with a History minor.
