The undergraduate prerequisites represent the baseline standards set by the American Chemical Society. Graduates from ACS-accredited institutions automatically satisfy these criteria. Other applicants might need to complete specific undergraduate courses simultaneously to meet ACS standards. Our graduate program does not mandate Graduate Record Examination (GRE) scores for either domestic or international applicants.
Students beginning the M.S. program with ACS-recognized chemistry degrees typically possess adequate preparation for the core curriculum. Those holding degrees in related fields like biology or biochemistry, or who demonstrated weaknesses in particular undergraduate subjects, may need to complete foundational coursework. Up to six semester hours of such preparatory classes can count toward the 30-hour degree requirement.
The foundational courses - Analytical Chemistry CHM 546, Biochemistry CHM 553, Inorganic Chemistry CHM 544, Organic Chemistry 550, and Physical Chemistry CHM 539 - form the program's structural framework. Students must complete four of these five core courses, with selection based on research focus. Biochemistry concentrators might choose CHM 553, 546, 550, and 539, while materials science students could opt for CHM 546, 544, 550, and 539.
