Students seeking a Master of Science (M.S.) degree need to partner with a faculty advisor, who will help them form an advisory committee. This committee, led by the advisor and including two other faculty members, oversees the student's academic plan (detailed later) and assesses thesis projects for Plan A candidates. The Master's programs offer adaptable structures, with course choices made jointly by students and their advisory committees. Students prepare a Plan of Study outlining their intended coursework for degree completion, which may incorporate certain advanced undergraduate computing courses (within specified limits) and approved graduate courses from outside CSE (also with restrictions). Committee approval of this plan is mandatory for meeting degree requirements. The official plan of study form, including comprehensive course guidelines, is available alongside other program documents.
Most admitted students holding a bachelor's in computer science or a related field fulfill M.S. requirements within two to three full-time semesters. Those with less extensive computing backgrounds might need extra time. Teaching and research assistants often extend their timeline due to non-academic responsibilities. Typically, on-campus studentsincluding those with assistantshipswrap up degree requirements within four semesters or fewer.
