The University of Connecticut's Professional Master's in Applied Financial Mathematics equips graduates with analytical skills for diverse roles throughout the financial sector, including investment banking, private equity, asset management, consulting, insurance, commercial banking, and brokerage services. This program combines financial theory, investment strategies, and risk assessment with advanced mathematical modeling and problem-solving approaches, while also developing the communication abilities needed in corporate settings.

A distinctive feature is the mandatory 6-credit Practicum requirement, which includes internship opportunities through the Goldenson Center for Actuarial Research. Established in 2008, the Center has consistently partnered with graduate students on practical industry research initiatives. These real-world projects have historically enhanced graduates' employment prospects, including securing H1b visa sponsorship for international students.

Ideal candidates possess strong undergraduate performance in mathematics, statistics, physics, engineering, quantitative economics, or similar quantitative disciplines, with aspirations to apply their mathematical expertise to financial problem-solving. While business or finance experience isn't required, a solid mathematical foundation is crucial. Applicants should have completed coursework covering differential, integral, and multivariable calculus, differential equations, linear algebra, and probability/statistics (with calculus prerequisites). Up to one missing course may be completed after enrollment.

Beyond standard Graduate School admission criteria, the program requires a personal statement and three recommendation letters (preferably from mathematics professors). Admitted students typically demonstrate approximately a 3.5/4.0 GPA in quantitative undergraduate coursework.

A sound undergraduate program in mathematics is required for entrance into any of our programs. All applicants are strongly urged to take the GRE General Test, and all Ph.D. applicants are strongly urged to take the GRE Subject Test. (The GRE code is 3915.) Failure to submit GRE scores will put the applicant at a disadvantage in the admissions process, and at a severe disadvantage in the decision process for a teaching assistantship.

Three recommendation letters are required.

To be considered for admission by the Graduate School, an international student who has not graduated from an English speaking university must take the TOEFL iBT and achieve a score of at least 79 or take the IELTS and achieve a score of at least 6.5.
