The Master of Arts in Music acknowledges a student's achievements in music, particularly in historical musicology or music theory. The Master of Music recognizes musical excellence with a focus on performance or conducting. These master's programs typically involve 24 to 30 course credits (varies by specialization). The Master of Arts additionally mandates 9 research credits (Grad 5950) along with a non-credit thesis. Performance students are required to give a public recital.

Prospective students must complete the Graduate Theory Placement Exam during the application process. (Refer to the Admission page for details.) Based on results, some candidates may need to enroll in Music 4371 (Theory Review) during their first semester before taking the required Music 5302 (Analytic Techniques). The exam can be scheduled anytime by contacting the UConn Music Department at (860) 486-3728.

You must hold a baccalaureate degree or its equivalent from a regionally accredited college or university.
A cumulative GPA for their most recent degree of 3.0 or higher for the entire degree
Minimum overall scores of 79 (Internet-based test – iBT/ iBT Home Edition), 550 (Old Paper-based test – PBT) or 22/30 on each of the Listening, Reading, and Writing sections (''New'' Paper-based test- PBT) or higher on the TOEFL test. (TOEFL Essentials is not accepted.)
Personal Statement
A minimum overall score of 6.5 or higher on the IELTS Academic Test
A minimum overall score of 53 or higher on the PTE Test.
