Master's programs specializing in composition and music education are available through both the graduate professional studies division (MM degree outlined here) and the graduate research studies division (Master of Arts). While MM programs, including composition and music education, emphasize performance and mandate an audition on a principal instrument or voice, the MA program doesn't require an audition for entry but may incorporate secondary-level applied study.
MM candidates must complete one year of full-time residency, except for piano accompanying/chamber music (two-year requirement) and conducting (typically two academic years). Most students finish the program in two years of full-time study.
The Master of Music (MM) focuses primarily on performance. Applicants must hold an undergraduate degree from an accredited institution, with preference given to those who've earned a Bachelor of Music degree or completed equivalent core coursework.
Both MM and MA degrees offer composition and music education specializations. The MM version features performance as a significant secondary component and requires an audition, while the MA alternative emphasizes research and doesn't mandate auditions or lessons.
