The Doctor of Philosophy program is available in Animal Science, with multiple specialization areas such as: Animal Genetics and Genomics, Stem Cell and Regenerative Biology, Food Microbiology and Safety, Meat Science, and Animal Physiology. Earning a PhD demands proven abilities in independent research along with associated academic competencies. Graduate students with assistantships must participate in teaching one course annually as part of their professional growth.
Every PhD curriculum must incorporate thirty (30) credit hours of coursework beyond the bachelor's degree (or equivalent), or a minimum of fifteen (15) credits past a master's degree in the same or a similar discipline. Doctoral candidates must complete one credit of ANSC 5693 (Graduate Presentation Skills) and two credits of ANSC 5694 (Seminar). Those who have already fulfilled the ANSC 5693 requirement are exempt. Additionally, students must meet Graduate School mandates for foreign language or related field prerequisites. Beyond coursework, successful completion of at least fifteen (15) credits in GRAD 6950 (Doctoral Dissertation Research) or GRAD 6960 (Full-Time Doctoral Dissertation Research) is mandatory.
The following courses represent common selections for students in specific concentrations, serving as a reference for academic planning. Final course selections will be determined through consultation with your primary advisor and doctoral committee, then documented in your Plan of Study. Previous education at other institutions may render some courses unnecessary.
