The Doctor of Musical Arts represents the pinnacle of performance-focused music education, designed for exceptional individuals to excel in both artistic practice and academic research. The Doctor of Philosophy in Music recognizes distinguished academic contributions to music scholarship. Earning this degree demonstrates comprehensive musical knowledge, specialized expertise in a particular area, and advanced research capabilities for academic and teaching pursuits.
Students should understand that doctoral studies involve more than completing coursework or meeting requirements. The degree is granted only when the Advisory Committee and Graduate Faculty are confident the candidate has achieved independent critical thinking and scholarly maturity in their chosen discipline.

You must hold a baccalaureate degree or its equivalent from a regionally accredited college or university.
A cumulative GPA for their most recent degree of 3.0 or higher for the entire degree
Minimum overall scores of 79 (Internet-based test – iBT/ iBT Home Edition), 550 (Old Paper-based test – PBT) or 22/30 on each of the Listening, Reading, and Writing sections (''New'' Paper-based test- PBT) or higher on the TOEFL test. (TOEFL Essentials is not accepted.)

A minimum overall score of 53 or higher on the PTE Test.
