Students in the world language program train to become Spanish teachers for grades 7-12. The curriculum includes general education courses, a 36-credit major focusing on grammar, literature, and cultural studies related to their chosen language, along with essential professional education coursework.
Effective teacher preparation plays a vital role in new educators' early career success. The strength and depth of the training program significantly influence both teaching performance and career longevity. The intensive five-year IB/M program offers a structured pathway, combining subject expertise, pedagogical knowledge, and hands-on experience to develop highly capable educators for diverse classrooms.
The IB/M program starts with two years of general education and subject preparation before admission to the Neag School of Education. After acceptance, students typically spend two more years deepening their subject knowledge and completing teacher training to earn their Bachelor's in Education. This is followed by a graduate year leading to a Master's in Curriculum and Instruction or Educational Psychology. Fulfilling all program requirements qualifies graduates for Connecticut state teaching certification.
