The Master of Science program in chemistry equips students with essential skills and expertise for specialized research in chemistry and allied fields. Earning an MS in Chemistry from CU Denver positions you for success in rigorous PhD or health sciences programs, while also delivering practical experience sought after by pharmaceutical, biotechnological, and specialized industrial employers. Our alumni have advanced to PhD programs, pre-professional schools, and careers across academia, government, and industry.
Students can choose between two program options: coursework-based or thesis-based. The department also provides a combined BS/MS degree pathway. Detailed program information is available in the right-hand menu. Each option includes four distinct specialization tracks, with further details provided below. Graduate students may also pursue our Data Science and Chemistry certificate program.
Chemistry explores the characteristics and interactions of matter. Our department provides two undergraduate degree options, a chemistry minor, an undergraduate biochemistry certificate, and an MS in chemistry with four specialized tracks.
The chemistry MS program emphasizes developing research capabilities and technical knowledge to prepare graduates for professional roles in chemistry and related fields. An MS from CU Denver offers both immediate career advantages in sectors like pharmaceuticals and biotechnology, as well as strong preparation for advanced study in PhD or health sciences programs.

Qualification Requirements
An undergraduate major in Chemistry or a closely related discipline is required, including two semesters of organic chemistry as well as training in analytical chemistry, physical chemistry, and/or inorganic chemistry. Students missing more than one of these courses may be limited in the tracks that they are eligible to select, and such students may be provided a provisional admission. An undergraduate GPA of 3.0 (on a 4 point scale) is desired although each application is considered on its own merits.
The GRE examination is recommended but not required.
International students have additional admission requirements concerning immigration status, proof of financial responsibility and acceptable TOEFL or IELTS scores or completion of the CU Denver English as a Second Language Academy.
Students currently in the Chemistry or Biochemistry BS program at CU Denver may want to consider the BS/MS option. This option includes the opportunity to enroll in graduate classes before enrolling in the MS program at CU Denver. See your undergraduate major advisor and/or the Chemistry graduate advisor.
