The program offers specialized training in applied mathematics and statistics, along with chances to engage in introductory research alongside globally renowned scholars. Students can customize their curriculum with great flexibility or focus on specific degree concentrations. All participants gain hands-on research experience through our unique Math Clinic and Statistical Consulting workshop. Current research initiatives cover diverse fields such as evolutionary dynamics, climate modeling, wildfire prediction, machine learning, genetic studies, data optimization, and beyond.
This degree equips students with modern expertise in various data science disciplines. The department operates on the principle that mathematics, statistics, computing, and data science are vital instruments for addressing real-world challenges. Our curriculum prioritizes developing employer-sought competencies, including analytical reasoning, data proficiency, quantitative interpretation, and—most crucially—the capacity to rapidly acquire new knowledge and techniques. Numerous MS alumni have secured positions within Denver's business, research, and academic communities.

Qualification Requirements

A baccalaureate or master's degree (not necessarily in mathematics) from an accredited college or university or completion of work equivalent to the baccalaureate or master's degree given at CU Denver with at least a 3.0 grade point average (GPA).
or
Sufficiently high performance on the GRE subject test in mathematics, or completion of at least 12 credit hours of graduate-level mathematical coursework.
In addition, students must have taken 30 semester hours of undergraduate mathematics, at least 24 of which are upper division courses with a grade of B- or better. These courses must include:
one semester of advanced calculus or real analysis (or equivalent)
one semester of linear algebra
one semester of one of the following:
abstract algebra
differential equations
discrete mathematics
probability
Complete at least 2 semesters (minimum of 30 credits) at an accredited college or university in the United States as a full-time student with a B average (3.0 GPA) or higher.
