The College of Architecture and Planning provides a single doctoral option: the PhD in Geography, Planning, and Design. As Colorado's sole doctoral program encompassing planning, architecture, and landscape architecture, this research-focused degree has shaped future faculty, professionals, and thought leaders since 1997. The interdisciplinary curriculum cultivates analytical scholars and creative researchers equipped to tackle pressing societal and environmental challenges. Students investigate relationships between human systems and physical environments while conducting research to foster equitable, sustainable communities across various scales. (Refer to our four specialized focus areas below.) This distinctive integration of Geography, Planning, and Design fosters groundbreaking research and professional practice. Addressing contemporary urban and environmental challenges demands transcending conventional academic boundaries and knowledge frameworks.
Our program prioritizes continuous improvement through rigorous assessment methods that enhance learning experiences, instructional quality, and program excellence. Five clearly defined learning outcomes establish common objectives for both faculty and students throughout the curriculum.
Students should have completed a degree from an accredited institution, or are currently pursuing or have completed a master’s degree from an accredited institution.
Minimum TOEFL IBT Total Score: 80; TOEFL Sub scores (Reading: 20, Listening: 20, Speaking: 20, Writing: 24).
Minimum IELTS Overall Band Score: 6.5, IELTS Sub scores as 5.5.
