The Design Science PhD program harnesses our distinctive collaborative environment to cultivate exceptional leaders in design research, practice, and education. As an interdisciplinary doctoral initiative, Design Science requires students to craft a personalized academic journey that combines specialized depth with cross-disciplinary exposure. Working closely with faculty advisors and the program committee, each scholar develops a customized study plan aligned with their background and aspirations. Every curriculum intentionally weaves together knowledge from multiple disciplines—this interdisciplinary approach forms the foundation of DESCI's program requirements. By drawing from the University of Michigan's premier academic offerings, the program blends rigorous coursework, innovative research, and practical applications. Participants complete a foundational curriculum covering integrative design methodologies and research techniques, then expand their expertise across multiple disciplines through university-wide course offerings. With guidance from two faculty mentors representing different fields, students synthesize their disciplines through pioneering research, ultimately contributing novel insights to design science through their dissertation work.
There can be several degree paths that a student may follow applying for the doctoral program:
A student with an MS/MA/MFA degree may be directly admitted to the DESCI PhD program.
Alternatively, a student can apply to a separate discipline-based MS/MA/MFA program, and seek admission to the DESCI PhD program. After one semester of full time enrollment in the Master’s program, the student can apply for admission to the DESCI PhD program as a dual degree student.
