CU Denver provides two distinct pathways within its civil engineering PhD program: The Doctor of Philosophy in Civil Engineering is a specialized technical degree designed for students holding an undergraduate engineering degree, while the Doctor of Philosophy in Civil Engineering Systems offers greater flexibility for those with bachelor's degrees in fields like science, mathematics, or economics. This collaborative program is jointly managed with the University of Colorado Boulder.
The civil engineering systems doctoral track operates under unique guidelines compared to the four conventional doctoral programs, enabling more cross-disciplinary research opportunities. This pathway can serve as the next academic step after completing a Master of Engineering degree.
The CU Denver College of Engineering, Design and Computing is committed to delivering thorough engineering education across undergraduate, graduate, and professional levels. Our faculty engage in research spanning five key disciplines: civil, electrical, and mechanical engineering, bioengineering, and computer science and engineering. Through partnerships with statewide industries, our laboratories and research initiatives provide students with practical experience essential for professional success.
The HESE graduate track (Hydrologic, Environmental, and Sustainability Engineering) within CU Denver's Civil Engineering Department integrates water cycle studies, environmental systems, and sustainability principles—the crucial concept that engineered solutions should promote economic vitality, ecological well-being, and social equity. We attract students from Colorado, nationwide, and internationally who aim to unite these components. Notably, with our downtown Denver location and evening course offerings, we stand as Colorado's premier choice for metro Denver professionals seeking exceptional graduate engineering education.
