The English Department's curriculum aims to cultivate students' capacity for thoughtful and creative literary analysis, nurture an appreciation for our literary heritage, and offer historical context for assessing modern works while developing writing skills. Graduates of the English program should demonstrate proficiency in articulating their thoughts through original compositions.
These academic requirements may be periodically updated by the department, with the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences maintaining discretion to approve individual exceptions. Consequently, students are strongly encouraged to frequently consult with both their major advisor and CLAS advisor when planning their academic path.
English students develop expertise in gathering and analyzing information while refining their communication abilities. They pursue careers requiring advanced language skills across various professional fields. Numerous alumni continue their education in graduate programs spanning creative writing, film studies, literature, as well as professional schools for medicine, law, journalism, and business administration.
