Geoscience education research (GER) advances our comprehension of learning processes in geoscience and how teaching methods can improve outcomes. This research approach fundamentally considers both students and educators as collaborators in the learning journey. GER employs methodologies that demand substantial expertise in geoscience concepts, methodologies, perspectives, and objectives, alongside social and educational research techniques. The field applies both qualitative and quantitative approaches to uncover learning obstacles related to Earth systems, cultivate scientific reasoning and spatial analysis abilities, boost student engagement with geoscience topics, and create, execute, and evaluate teaching methods focused on learners that foster meaningful, enduring understanding.
