Geophysics explores Earth's physical properties through an interdisciplinary approach. The CU Geophysical Sciences Program, housed in the Physics Department, provides research opportunities both on campus and through partnerships with external laboratories. The Center for Imaging the Earth's Interior (CIEI), operating within the Physics Department, conducts fundamental and practical geophysical studies. Core investigations employ advanced seismic methods, satellite remote sensing, and geodetic approaches to examine Earth's solid structure, hydrosphere, and their dynamic processes. Cutting-edge simulations also model planetary and terrestrial deep interiors. This work typically combines computational modeling with data interpretation, aiming to understand Earth's elastic, inelastic, and viscous characteristics, along with mass movement variations in subsurface porous materials and water systems.
