Geoscience education research (GER) advances our comprehension of learning processes in geoscience and how teaching methods can improve outcomes. This research approach fundamentally considers both students and educators as collaborators in the learning journey. GER employs methodologies demanding substantial expertise in geoscience concepts, practices, perspectives, and objectives, combined with social and educational science techniques. The field applies both qualitative and quantitative approaches to pinpoint learning obstacles related to Earth systems, cultivate scientific reasoning, analytical abilities, spatial awareness, and critical thinking, boost student engagement with geoscience topics, and create, execute, and evaluate teaching methods focused on learners that foster meaningful, enduring understanding.
