The Institute of Cognitive Science (ICS) explores and teaches about cognitive processes and their influence on our environment. Spanning fields from neuroscience to AI, our researchers are transforming our understanding of mental functions and human-world interactions. We take a multidisciplinary approach that integrates psychology, neuroscience, education, linguistics, computer science, philosophy, speech/hearing science, information science, and other disciplines. Our advanced degree programs equip students to tackle major 21st-century challenges. You'll collaborate with top-tier researchers while developing leadership skills in innovation through our specialized curriculum. Prospective graduate students must first gain admission to a CU Boulder graduate program before applying to ICS certificate or PhD programs (requiring an ICS application, unofficial transcript, and study plan) while maintaining satisfactory academic progress.
Applicants must:
Hold a baccalaureate degree from an accredited college or university, or have done work equivalent to that required for such a degree.
Show promise of ability to pursue advanced study and research, as judged by the student’s scholastic record.
Have adequate preparation to enter graduate study in the chosen field. Have at least a 2.75 (2.00=C) undergraduate grade point average.
All international applicants are required to meet a minimum standard of English proficiency.
