The archaeology specialization offers comprehensive geographic insights into ancient civilizations, spanning from North America's Plains to Mesoamerica and the Intermediate Area. These indigenous communities varied from simple hunter-gatherer groups to complex city-states and imperial systems. Faculty research focuses on diverse areas including environmental adaptation, ethnoarchaeological studies, public archaeology initiatives, social dynamics, stone tool and pottery examinations, plus archaeological applications of remote sensing and geophysical techniques.
Archaeology intersects with biological anthropology through multiple connections. When excavating burial sites, archaeologists often collaborate with biological anthropologists to investigate physical characteristics, health indicators, and related subjects. Both fields share a strong focus on human-environment interactions, examining how populations have adapted to and modified their surroundings.
Strong connections also exist between archaeology and cultural anthropology, as archaeological frameworks frequently draw upon cultural theories. Given archaeology's long-term perspective, it also develops theoretical approaches independently from ethnographic research. Ethnoarchaeology bridges these disciplines by analyzing modern societies' material culture to enhance interpretations of ancient behaviors. Both fields investigate intercultural interactions, including historical ethnography, population movements, cultural exchange, economic systems, conquest dynamics, knowledge transmission, elite cultural adoption, and the emergence of multiethnic states.
