The Western American Studies Certificate provides CU Boulder students with a distinctive regional studies program. This interdisciplinary approach enables examination of the area's defining and changing themes: ranging from its native plants and wildlife to its historical narratives and literary works, while addressing political, social, cultural, economic, and environmental challenges confronting Western communities alongside the natural environments they call home. The 18-credit certification consists of an introductory class and culminating project course, with students selecting the other four courses from diverse academic disciplines. This flexible structure empowers learners to craft a personalized exploration of the American West tailored to their specific academic passions.
