Sociology examines human social interactions through a scientific lens. It explores the reciprocal relationship between society and individuals, analyzing how each shapes the other. Sociologists observe and interpret behaviors across various social units - from individuals to entire civilizations. They also develop and assess social initiatives and governmental policies. This field encompasses diverse areas including theoretical frameworks, investigative techniques, social hierarchies, ethnic dynamics, societal evolution, criminal behavior, population studies, gender roles, belief systems, group psychology, and environmental relationships.

CU Boulder's bachelor's program in sociology culminates in a BA degree. The curriculum combines foundational instruction in sociological principles, investigative techniques, and statistical analysis with specialized courses examining social frameworks, cultural patterns, interpersonal dynamics, and societal transformation. The quantitative research course focuses on numerical analysis, covering topics like survey design, data collection techniques, computational approaches, and statistical interpretation. Conversely, the qualitative research course concentrates on observational methods, teaching skills such as in-depth interviews, ethnographic studies, data categorization, and research documentation. Student research projects have investigated diverse environments including correctional facilities, healthcare institutions, faith-based groups, business enterprises, labor organizations, shelters, conflict resolution services, and social movements.
