The program involves the in-depth study of the various disorders of communication coupled with practicum experience. Students at the Master of Arts level are expected to acquire those skills which would enable them to identify and manage a full range of speech/language and hearing disorders.
Graduates are required to acquire specific skills and knowledge according to the Council on Academic Accreditation in Speech-Language Pathology in order to be certified by the American Speech-Language and Hearing Association and to be eligible for licensure in the State of Ohio in (for speech-language pathology) and Ohio Department of Education (school) licensure. As such, you will complete course work in the areas of Language and Literacy, Phonology, Aphasia, Motor Speech, Dysphagia, Cognition, Voice, Craniofacial Anomalies, Stuttering, Augmentative and Alternative Communication, and Management of Children with Hearing Impairment.
In order to provide you with adequate advanced didactic and practicum experience with persons manifesting communication disorders, a minimum of two years of study is necessary, including two summer terms. If you do not possess a well-rounded undergraduate major in Speech and Hearing, or come from another field, you must complete undergraduate requirements prior to beginning the graduate program.

Qualification Requirements
The Master of Arts degree program in Speech-Language Pathology is designed to provide in-depth knowledge and skills in the areas required for a career in speech-language pathology. This program of study provides students with the knowledge to pursue a satisfying and rewarding career in health care, medicine, research, or education.
Applicants must meet the following admission requirements:
Bachelor's degree. For students who enroll in the program, an official transcript with Bachelor's degree posted must be received by the CSD department prior to the beginning of the first semester.
3.0 minimum overall undergraduate grade point average.
A minimum score of 100 IBT on the TOEFL for students whose native language is not English.
A grade of B- or better is required in communication sciences and disorders courses (see courses below with an *).
Due to COVID-19, we will accept prerequisite coursework with grade of PASS (or equivalent). We encourage students to have grades of B- or higher reported instead of PASS.
25 hours of guided observations completed by start of program (August 1)
A B- or better is also strongly recommended for all ASHA required courses. Students entering the professional preparation program in speech-language pathology must have either an undergraduate degree with a major in communication disorders (with all required prerequisites below completed) or complete a set of prerequisite courses prior to beginning the graduate program.
