The Department of Romance Languages and Literatures provides a Master's program in Hispanic literatures, focusing on Spanish and Spanish American poetry, fiction, drama, cinema, interdisciplinary studies, literary criticism, creative writing, and teaching methodologies. Faculty members specialize in all significant eras of Spanish and Spanish American literature, maintaining active research profiles both nationally and internationally. Graduate students benefit from close faculty mentorship in coursework, with many collaborating on joint research or teaching initiatives. Teaching assistants receive financial assistance along with comprehensive training, including a preparatory seminar before classes begin and continuous teaching workshops throughout the academic year.
Graduate students form the core of our department's vibrant community. Our alumni's strong placement record in teaching positions demonstrates the program's effectiveness. The curriculum requires enrollment in three 4-credit courses per quarter, with comprehensive examinations scheduled for spring quarter of the second year. The Spanish MA program at UC serves as excellent preparation for both secondary and postsecondary teaching careers, as well as for students pursuing doctoral studies.
