The Literary and Cultural Studies (LCS) graduate program provides fully-funded, customized academic paths exploring diverse literary traditions, cultural theories, and research approaches. MA candidates qualify for two years of complete tuition coverage along with teaching assistant positions, while PhD candidates receive four years of tuition support plus teaching roles. Recently, the English Department has extended support through enhanced student lectureships offering a fifth funding year, supplemented by research grants from the Charles Phelps Taft Research Center and University Research Council.
Differing from programs where teaching assistants aid in large lectures, UC graduate instructors lead their own classes while receiving comprehensive teaching preparation, including a mandatory graduate-level composition pedagogy course. While similar-sized programs often require 3-4 annual courses, UC's MA and PhD students teach just one composition section per term. Additionally, our PhD candidates gain experience teaching literature courses—from historical surveys to specialized topics—where they develop innovative classes aligned with their research specialties (examples include Queer Comics, Badass Women on Film, and Revenge narratives).
