Students acquire in-depth understanding of literary works spanning from medieval British texts and early American colonial writings to modern global/postcolonial and contemporary U.S. literature, along with expertise in literary theory, critical analysis, and cross-disciplinary approaches. The curriculum combines exploration of national literary canons with cutting-edge subjects including scientific literary studies, environmental humanities, translation theory, gender and sexuality research, and critical race studies. Graduates develop both qualitative and quantitative research capabilities for academic careers in English studies or creative writing proficiency for professional authorship. While an MA in literature is available, it functions only as part of the doctoral track. The English Department provides comprehensive doctoral studies culminating in a Ph.D. in literature, with full program details accessible through the graduate advisor or Department Chair.
