The Program is based at Cincinnati Children's Hospital Medical Center, a globally renowned research hub for pediatric disease fundamentals. Ranked among the top five children's hospitals in the U.S. and second in NIH funding, it explores developmental, molecular, and cellular biology across all animal model systems. The faculty blends equal parts basic scientists and clinicians, with most being prominent figures in their specialties worldwide. A distinctive feature is the strong collaboration between researchers and physicians, bridging fundamental developmental processes with pediatric medical applications. Students benefit from exceptional faculty guidance and close mentoring relationships.
Typically completing their studies in five years, students often publish in leading journals. Following initial lab rotations, they choose a thesis project and advisor. A qualifying exam occurs early in the second year. The Program provides exceptional developmental biology coursework, ranging from foundational to advanced levels, accommodating diverse academic backgrounds. It stands out for offering a unique collaborative course where scientists and clinicians jointly teach about developmental origins of childhood illnesses.
