The Classics Department provides doctoral programs culminating in a Ph.D. in Classics, allowing students to focus on Greek and Latin languages/literature, classical/pre-classical archaeology, or Greek/Roman history. While doctoral candidates typically concentrate on one discipline, the interconnected nature of classical studies mandates coursework across all major fields. Graduates gain qualifications to teach Classics, Western civilization, and interdisciplinary subjects.
The curriculum is comprehensive, typically featuring at least eight courses per quarter. Subjects span from Bronze Age Greece to late Roman history, covering works from Homer to later Latin authors. Cross-disciplinary study is encouraged—history or philosophy students may enroll in relevant History/Philosophy Department courses. Archaeology students can take specialized Anthropology courses, while philology students may study Romance/Germanic languages or English. Hebrew Union College also offers Near Eastern studies courses for interested students.
