As vital members of medical teams, surgical technologists assist in sterile surgical procedures under a surgeon's guidance. Often referred to as scrubs or OR technicians, they collaborate closely with surgeons, anesthesiologists, first assistants, and circulating nurses during operations.

Pre-surgery, before the sterile scrub process begins, surgical technologists may assist in checking and adjusting non-sterile equipment to confirm proper functionality. They prepare the OR by scrubbing in, then arranging sterile instruments, supplies, drapes, and solutions on the back table after gowning and gloving. Following patient positioning and preparation, they assist the surgical team in donning sterile attire and applying patient drapes.

Throughout procedures, surgical technologists provide surgeons with necessary instruments and sterile materials. Their duties include retractor positioning, suture cutting, and maintaining accurate counts of sponges, needles, and instruments. They assist with wound dressing application and specimen handling for laboratory testing post-operation.

After surgery, these professionals may help transport patients to recovery areas while also preparing the OR for subsequent procedures by cleaning and restocking. Some specialize in sterile processing, handling instrument decontamination, set reassembly, and sterilization equipment operation.

The OR demands quick thinking and adaptability. Successful candidates for this field thrive under pressure, excel at multitasking, and embrace the dynamic nature of surgical environments.
