Their duties include retractor positioning, suture cutting, and maintaining accurate counts of sponges, needles, and instruments. They assist with wound dressing application and specimen handling for laboratory testing post-operation.

After surgery, these professionals may help transport patients to recovery areas while also preparing the OR for subsequent procedures by cleaning and restocking. Some specialize in sterile processing, handling instrument decontamination, set reassembly, and sterilization equipment operation.
