The Master of Arts Program in the Social Sciences (MAPSS) is a rigorous, intellectually enriching one-year graduate program that provides unparalleled access to faculty and resources at a top-tier research university. Students specialize in fields such as anthropology, economics, history, political science, psychology, sociology, or pursue interdisciplinary studies. The curriculum includes nine graduate-level courses drawn from across UChicago's departments and professional schools, along with direct faculty supervision for the MA thesis. Doctoral student preceptors and MAPSS senior staff guide course selection and provide weekly research mentorship. With highly competitive admissions, MAPSS awards significant merit-based financial assistance, ranging from partial to full tuition coverage. Our program boasts the highest PhD placement rate of any MA program globally. For those pursuing non-academic careers, we cultivate professional research and writing competencies. Our adaptable yet structured curriculum, supported by a dedicated Career Services Director offering weekly workshops, helps students chart their ideal career trajectory.
