The PhD program in Transformations of the Classical Tradition offers students the opportunity to explore the enduring legacy of classical ideas and writings through a customized academic path. During the initial two years, participants complete coursework designed in collaboration with the Director of Graduate Studies and TCLT program Chair. This curriculum emphasizes—though isn't restricted to—foundational works in literature, philosophy, history, and political theory, available in Greek or Latin, alongside their reinterpretation and evolution in modern languages. Additionally, students must demonstrate proficiency in a second ancient and modern language within this period. The program begins with a two-quarter introductory seminar led by two TCLT faculty members—one from Classics and another from affiliated departments like Art History, Social Thought, or Comparative Literature—highlighting interdisciplinary approaches to classical studies. By the third year, students undertake an oral exam in their specialization, participate in a dissertation proposal workshop, and finalize their research plan. The remaining years focus on dissertation completion, with the program structured to ensure all degree requirements can be met within six years.
