The Philosophy PhD Program provides rigorous academic training to prepare students for careers as philosophy scholars and educators. The curriculum focuses on four key elements: (1) Completing graduate-level coursework covering modern philosophy's primary fields and its historical development. (2) Developing a Preliminary Essay through multiple drafts, incorporating faculty feedback and revisions. (3) Formulating an original research project and producing a doctoral dissertation with faculty committee guidance. (4) Gaining teaching experience first as assistants in lecture courses, then leading independent tutorials and small classes. Beyond these core requirements, students and professors collaborate in workshops and reading groups where students present their research for peer and faculty review. The entire program fosters an ongoing, vibrant philosophical exchange between students and faculty. Professors further support this intellectual community through mentorship, academic assessments, and strategic career guidance.
Applicants to our graduate and professional programs are expected to be enrolled in or to have completed a bachelor’s degree or its equivalent from an accredited college or university. Applicants from a three-year bachelor’s program will be given due consideration. Because all of our programs feature competitive admission, no particular academic degree or background will guarantee admission to one of our graduate divisions.
