Since the 1920s Oriental Institute archaeological expeditions, the University of Chicago has offered instruction in ancient Iran and Iranian languages. By 1966, the university became one of North America's pioneers in regularly teaching Persian literature spanning the 10th to 20th centuries. Numerous current professors of Persian literature and Iranian studies at institutions worldwide received their training through NELC. The Persian Language and Literature program provides comprehensive training in both the language and its literary traditions across eleven centuries. Students may choose Arabic, Armenian, Turkic, or Hebrew as their secondary Middle Eastern language. Specialization options include: Persian Language, Classical Persian Literature, Modern Persian Literature and Cinema, Comparative Literature, and Sufism.
