Historians have consistently focused on cities as subjects of study, with the shift toward urban societies serving as a key narrative of modernity since the early modern era. At the University of Chicago, scholars explore global cities through diverse lenses: recent faculty and student research has covered migration, sociocultural geography, urban design, maritime trade hubs, municipal governance, activism, city-themed literature, material artifacts, creative expression, economic growth in urban centers, the transformation of community ties, slavery in urban settings, racial and ethnic dynamics, healthcare systems, law enforcement, informal economies, graft, and conflict. Those enrolled in our program will broaden their understanding of urban contexts beyond limited regions and historical frames while tapping into interdisciplinary collaborations at a university where urban research has thrived for decades.
