The Composition program is designed to cultivate students' artistic and technical skills in musical composition. Each student receives personalized instruction from faculty members, often working with multiple professors throughout their residency. The curriculum also covers diverse subjects such as score interpretation, conducting techniques, orchestration methods, music analysis, modern genres, historical contexts, and global musical practices. Composition students choose a specialization from four options: ethnomusicology, music history, theoretical analysis, or digital music. Their studies culminate in writing and defending a doctoral-level research paper before an academic panel.
