Biomechanics involves applying mechanical principles to analyze forces affecting living organisms. Our research takes an evolutionary approach: we employ measurements and models of physical form and behavior to investigate how organisms are designed and function through an evolutionary lens.
Ongoing research focuses
Finite-element analysis, live bone strain studies, and theoretical modeling of:
how sutures influence alligator jaw development and mechanics,
feeding-related skull dynamics in lizards and primates.
Brain regulation of mammalian feeding patterns.
The development of rhythmic movements in vertebrate feeding and locomotion.
Shape analysis and computer simulations of vertebrate skulls.
Evolutionary mechanics of feeding and movement systems in coral reef fish species.
