The Law School provides two advanced graduate degrees: the Doctor of Jurisprudence (J.S.D.) and the Doctor of Comparative Law (D.Comp.L.). While the J.S.D. is the more popular choice, students may opt for the D.Comp.L. if they fulfill identical degree criteria.
Although J.S.D. applicants typically complete a year in the Law School's LL.M. Program first, exceptional graduates from other U.S. law school LL.M. or J.D. programs may qualify for Chicago's J.S.D. Program. Admission to the J.S.D. Program requires applicants to either hold an LL.M. or J.D. from a U.S. law school or be currently enrolled in such a program. LL.M. degrees obtained outside the United States, even from common law jurisdictions, do not satisfy this admission prerequisite.
