Students pursuing Latin American Studies develop comprehensive expertise in specific areas of Latin American history, politics, economics, or related fields. They acquire proficiency in social science methodologies applied to Latin American contexts and master Spanish or Portuguese as research tools. The Latin American Studies BA program prepares graduates for diverse career paths in business, media, public service, education, or nonprofit work, as well as advanced studies in social sciences. Those with stronger interests in regional languages and literature might explore the Romance Languages and Literatures major. Latin American Studies majors must complete the BA Colloquium and submit a thesis. University of Chicago's renowned faculty have established distinguished thematic research programs.
