The UCSC Science Communication Program maintains exceptional training standards and delivers top-tier quality in science journalism. Those who specialize in making science accessible pursue rewarding careers that feed their intellectual curiosity. They document scientific advancements, breakthroughs, key figures, and policy developments, frequently working directly from research facilities or on-site locations. Science communicators can explore various career paths: digital or traditional media roles, institutional writing positions at universities, government bodies, research institutions, cultural centers, and wildlife parks, as well as multimedia production for online platforms and broadcasting.

UC Santa Cruz's science writing program has been shaping skilled science communicators since 1981. This intensive one-year graduate program emphasizes hands-on learning through demanding coursework and varied internship opportunities. It stands as the sole U.S. graduate science writing program mandating both a science degree and research background.

With over 350 alumni, our graduates hold positions as journalists and editors at leading science publications, digital news outlets, research organizations, academic institutions, and healthcare facilities. Approximately 50% of our graduates work independently, primarily to choose their preferred locations and focus on the scientific topics that most interest them.
