Our program provides a unique perspective on political studies, fostering connections between politics and various other fields of study.
There's a purpose behind our department being named the Politics Department:
We examine politics through diverse lenses including historical, philosophical, cultural, and conceptual viewpoints, complementing the scientific methods typically used in American political science.
We focus on understanding politics within its real-world context, often questioning broad theoretical frameworks that lack grounding in evidence or textual foundations.
Political substance takes priority in our approach. While we value methodological skills, they serve as tools for meaningful research rather than being the ultimate goal.
We promote cross-disciplinary political studies, with students frequently participating in seminars and collaborating with faculty across multiple departments - extending beyond our official Affiliated Graduate Faculty. Graduate candidates can explore research opportunities and receive guidance from advisors spanning Social Sciences, Arts, Humanities, Physical and Biological Sciences, and even Engineering disciplines.
