The Department of Molecular, Cell and Developmental Biology is part of the graduate Program in Biomedical Science and Engineering (PBSE). With 52 faculty members primarily from the Departments of Molecular, Cell, and Developmental Biology, Biomolecular Engineering, Chemistry and Biochemistry, and Microbiology and Environmental Toxicology, students benefit from diverse expertise and outstanding interdisciplinary research training opportunities. PBSE applicants select one of four specialized tracks:
Molecular, Cell and Developmental Biology (MCD)
Biomolecular Engineering and Bioinformatics (BMEB)
Chemical Biology, Biochemistry and Biophysics (CB3)
Microbial Biology and Pathogenesis (MICRO)
Each track offers tailored core courses and advanced electives led by PBSE faculty, delivering cutting-edge interdisciplinary training in biomedical science and engineering. First-year students complete research rotations in three different PBSE labs, with cross-disciplinary projects encouraged. The MCD track boasts a strong training history and receives support from a National Institutes of Health Training Grant. Alumni have secured faculty positions at prestigious institutions including Harvard Medical School, UC Santa Barbara, and the University of Texas, as well as leadership roles in leading biotech companies like Affymetrix.
