The Bachelor of Arts (B.A.) in Mathematics Education is tailored to equip students for careers teaching mathematics from kindergarten through 12th grade. While maintaining a strong foundation in advanced mathematics, the program emphasizes coursework directly applicable to K-12 instruction, including number theory, classical geometry, and mathematics history. The curriculum also incorporates supervised teaching practice. Many students in this program join CalTeach to gain hands-on experience and establish connections with nearby schools.
California mandates that prospective secondary mathematics teachers pass the CSET (previously known as The National Teachers Examination) to qualify for credential programs. However, high school teaching candidates can bypass these exams by completing the mathematics education major along with three designated supplementary courses. Detailed information about these additional requirements is available through the Mathematics Department's Undergraduate Adviser, official department website, and the Education Department's advising office.
