A mathematics major provides an overview of key developments in theoretical mathematics from the past four centuries, viewed through a contemporary lens. This knowledge is then utilized to address various challenges, both within mathematics itself and in fields like physics, cryptography, and finance. Majors are also required to participate in an undergraduate seminar, typically during their junior or senior year. For applied mathematics students, this seminar must be taken in both years. These seminars offer valuable experience in mastering complex topics and presenting them effectively. To qualify for departmental honors, majors must complete a senior thesis project.

Barnard's general education requirements cover a wide range of subjects: literature, the social sciences, language and the arts, lab sciences, and quantitative areas. For this reason, you should acquire a strong foundation in high school, taking courses from the core academic subjects: math, science, English, history, and foreign language.
