The Music Department offers comprehensive musical training for students pursuing careers as performers, scholars, educators, or other music-related professions. Our curriculum delivers rigorous instruction across interconnected disciplines that form a complete musical foundation: music history, global music traditions, composition, theory, and performance practice. Our M.M. and D.M.A. programs in Music provide exceptional professional preparation through instruction from our renowned faculty of active performers and scholars. As a graduate performance major, you'll receive personalized mentorship from our world-class faculty - accomplished soloists, opera stars, orchestral musicians, and master pedagogues. Performance opportunities include studio classes, chamber music collaborations, and participation in major ensembles like our chamber choir, orchestra, wind ensemble, brass choir, contemporary music group, and annual opera. You'll study musicology and theory with leading scholars who direct doctoral programs, while benefiting from our exceptional music library's extensive collections. Multiple public recitals in our premier concert venues will develop your artistry and pedagogical skills, with many students gaining teaching experience through assistantships. The program regularly hosts masterclasses with international artists visiting Santa Barbara and welcomes distinguished composers for residencies.
