The Philosophy Graduate Program has two primary goals: first, to equip you with comprehensive knowledge across diverse philosophical topics through coursework, preparing you to become a versatile philosopher and skilled educator. Second, it aims to nurture your research abilities by offering guided opportunities that lead to completing a doctoral dissertation. Our department specializes in analytic philosophy, with particular expertise in key fields including philosophy of language and logic, philosophy of mind, ethics and political philosophy, epistemology, ancient philosophy, modern philosophy history, and metaphysics. Ultimately, UCSB graduates emerge with outstanding teaching capabilities and a solid foundation in philosophy's fundamental disciplines.
